2012-05-20: Take-Home Final Exams - Due

posted Jan 20, 2015, 3:34 PM by St. Nicholas Church School Ann Arbor Michigan   [ updated Jan 23, 2015, 7:05 PM ]

The Church School Take-Home Final Exams are due on May 20, 2012.

They were distributed to our students on Palm Sunday, April 8, 2012, to students in 2nd Grade and up. The exams are also be available to download from this website.

The primary purpose of the Final Exam is education. It gives students the opportunity to revisit and integrate everything they have learned over the past year.

The completed Final Exams are due back on or before Sunday, May 20, 2012. Please note that this is a strict deadline.

Students will have more than a month to complete the exam. This should be more than enough time for everyone.

New this year:
  • The only way to turn in a completed final exam will be to deposit it in a special drop-box placed for this purpose outside the main church office.
  • If the church building is accessible, then the drop-box is also accessible. This makes handing in the completed exams easy and fair for all.
  • This means that exams should NOT be given to teachers, left in the Church School office, handed-in to the church office, handed to Fr. Nick, left on desks, etc.
  • After Sunday, May 20, 2012, this drop-box will no longer be available and no more exams will be accepted.

2012-04-11: Holy Wednesday - Holy Unction & Retreat

posted Jan 20, 2015, 3:27 PM by St. Nicholas Church School Ann Arbor Michigan   [ updated Jan 23, 2015, 7:03 PM ]

As is our custom every year, at 4:00 PM on Holy Wednesday, April 11, 2012, we will have a special Holy Unction service for all Church School students.

This will be followed by our annual Holy Week Church School Retreat, 5:30-6:30 PM.

All Church School students should attend both the Holy Unction Service and the Retreat.

For the Retreat, students will assemble by youth group (in the Education wing of the church) as follows:
  • GOYA  (Dani Nadra and Deno Prokos)
  • JOY     (Cleo Mihalopoulos and Joanne Gabl)
  • HOPE  (Eva Mikhail and Tony Mihalopoulos)
Teachers will stay with their group and teach all three topics.
We hope that Fr. Nick will be able to move from group to group and teach Topic 1.

The three topics for our Retreat this year are:
  1. The Fig Tree
  2. The Parable of the 10 Virgins
  3. The sinful woman who anointed Christ
More information about these topics is available on the Church School calendar (look for April 11, 2012):

Additional resources about Holy Week can be found here:
  • http://www.goarch.org/ourfaith/ourfaith8432
  • http://www.goarch.org/ourfaith/ourfaith8435
It is a good idea for children to have a good snack prior to attending the Holy Unction Service and Retreat (as there will be no food inside the Church).
Parents can plan to pick up the children from the exonarthex around 6:30 PM.

2012-03-11: Oratorical Festival News

posted Jan 20, 2015, 2:38 PM by St. Nicholas Church School Ann Arbor Michigan   [ updated Jan 23, 2015, 7:03 PM ]

Our parish 2012 St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival took place on Sunday, March 11, 2012.

A total of 12 students in the Junior Division (Grades 6-9) presented their speeches in the Social Hall (10:00 to 11:30 AM). Fortunately, the Junior Division speeches ended at about the same time as the Divine Liturgy.

For the first time, the Senior Division (6 students in Grades 10-12) had the opportunity to deliver their speeches in a more formal setting inside the church (12:30 to 1:30 PM). The new time and larger space also allowed family members and other interested parishioners to attend the Senior Division speeches.

A summary of our 2012 St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival is available at the Church School website. It lists all participating students as well as the many volunteers who provided special help:
http://churchschool.sharepoint.com/Pages/2012OratoricalFestival.aspx

We would like to recognize and thank our students, their families, and everyone who helped with our Oratorical Festival.

Especially, we would like to thank Dr. Vicki Kiningham, our Oratorical Festival Chair, who once again did a fantastic job!
